When Thomas Jefferson used the phase "separation of church and state" in a letter (not the constitution- to those of you that are IQ challenged) he wrote to Baptist ministers in Danbury, Connecticut, he was assuring them that the federal government could in no way interfere with the practices of their Baptist churches.
